The number on the whiteboard was $50 million. Twelve months. That was the target. The company was at $5 million ARR, profitable, stable, respected. But the CEO had seen something. A gap. A vision of what the company could become.

The Director Who Stopped Waiting

For three years, he had been doing the work of a VP.

Everyone in the organization knew it. His peers knew it. His team knew it. Even his CEO acknowledged it in quarterly reviews with phrases like "exceptional contributor" and "invaluable to the business."

But the title never came. And neither did the conversation about why.

So he waited. He worked harder. He took on more scope. He absorbed more responsibility without more authority. He told himself that if he just delivered enough, the recognition would follow.

It did not.
